Clay Sheriff warning of supermarket wallet thief

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- The Clay County Sheriff's Office is warning elderly shoppers after a woman allegedly stole a 71-year-old woman's wallet out of her purse.

Mary Justino, Public Information Officer for the Clay County Sheriff's Office, said the theft happened September 25 around 1 p.m.

Justino said a woman was seen walking the aisles without purchasing anything. The woman stops next to an elderly shopper's cart while her back is turned.

Surveillance video then shows her take the 71-year-old's wallet out of her purse. The victim found out her wallet was missing when she went to buy her groceries and couldn't.

Justino said the elderly woman's credit card was used twice at gas stations in Jacksonville.

Anyone who may recognize the woman in the surveillance video is asked to call the Clay County Sheriff's Office 904-264-6512.

Clay County voting on Sunday alcohol sales

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- A law prohibiting the sale of alcohol until 2 p.m. on Sundays in Clay County could soon change.

The referendum is on the November 6 ballot in Clay County. Some business owners are pushing to move it to 7 a.m., which would make it consistent with the rest of the days of the week.

"It's been a big burden on all the businesses here in Clay County," said Elaine Cassala, who owns Whitey's Fish Camp in Clay County. "We wanted to be able to serve alcohol at 7 a.m. in the morning just like the other counties. We wanted to be on a level playing field as those other counties."

Some just don't feel it is appropriate to be selling alcohol on a Sunday or extending the hours.

Karen Brewer said on First Coast News' Facebook page, "It needs to stay at 2pm or even later at 3pm NEVER BEFORE 2PM ... (sic)."

Dax D. Bonnétt said, "How can u have an NFL team that plays at 1300 and restrict the sale of spirits to 1400 (sic)?"

Lightning zone: UF scientists are controlling bolts

CAMP BLANDING, Fla. -- Lightning is perhaps the most unpredictable of all weather phenomena.

Where it will strike during a thunderstorm is a mystery and impossible to guess.

But at a testing facility in a remote part of North Florida, within range to hear machine gun fire on Camp Blanding, is where Dr. Martin Uman and Dr. Douglas Jordan are making some pretty impressive fire of their own.

"We are acknowledged as the number one lightning research and testing facility in the world," Uman said.

During the severe weather season, the two men are hard at work full time at the International Center for Lightning Research and Testing.

Uman and Jordan are University of Florida faculty who run the facility.

They say they are only 3 others like this on the planet.

"There's one in New Mexico, we know that," Uman said.

The other two he believes are in China, but research doesn't really show any others.

Sunday alcohol sales hot topic in Clay County election

CLAY COUNTY, Fla. -- If you want an alcoholic drink in Clay County on Sunday, you have to wait until 2 p.m., but that law could soon change.

There is a referendum on the ballot in Clay County about when alcohol can be sold on Sundays.  Some business owners are pushing to move it to 7 a.m., which would make it consistent with the rest of the days of the week.

Elaine Cassala with Whitey's Fish Camp in Orange Park says the fact that they and other businesses can't sell alcohol until 2 p.m. puts them at a disadvantage and their customers are going to the surrounding counties.  She says not only are customers that want to have a drink going to other counties, but also fisherman who would stop by to buy bait and a case of beer early in the morning are not coming to Clay County to do that on Sundays.
