Clay County Kicks Off Distracted Driving Reduction Campaign

Through a grant from State Farm officials, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office placed multiple banners around our county this week to raise awareness about this problem.  The message on the banners reads “Texting + Driving: A Deadly Combination”. Banner locations include Orange Park, Middleburg, Green Cove Springs, Keystone and Fleming Island.

Why is this safety campaign necessary?  State Farm asked 1,000 consumers about their attitudes toward cell phone/texting use while driving. Here are just a few of the results: 65% of drivers talk on a hand-held cell phone, 24% of drivers read text messages, and 12% respond to text messages frequently while driving. Local State Farm agent Russ Vorhis is the point person for the partnership with the CCSO and knows the importance of all drivers keeping their attention on the road. “As the country’s leading auto insurer, State Farm is committed to working for safer roadways through our research and our support of initiatives like this with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.  It is our hope that distractive driving banners will remind drivers of all ages to keep their focus on the road to reduce crashes, serious injuries or death”, said Vorhis.
