PALATKA, Fla. -- With the wildfires burning across the First Coast, county fire services need more volunteers to help out on the ground and act as support.
Shannon Tilton is a volunteer firefigher in Putnam County. She's been active since 1997 and says volunteering can lead to a new career, or just be a great way to help out the community.
"Putnam County paid for my fire school and they also paid for my EMT training, I'm now EMT certified."
She says typically the volunteer staff are the first to get picked when there are openings within the full-time fire department.
Right now, she says they are worn so thin because of all the wildfires as well as the standard house calls and medical emergencies.
