Take steps to reduce mosquitoes

 

The Clay County Health Department and Clay County Mosquito Control remind residents of steps to take to reduce the areas where mosquitoes breed. “While there have been no cases of West Nile reported to our health department, we are advising residents and visitors to Clay County to take action to protect themselves from mosquito bites and help remove places where mosquitoes breed by following the drain and cover recommendations,” stated Nancy Mills, Health Department Administrator.

Orange County, Fla. -- Two adults and a juvenile from Jacksonville and Middleburg are facing prison time and fines after Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) law enforcement officers arrested them in Orange County for killing a state-designated threatened species and for felony cruelty to animals. 

Storm system brings potential for dangerous weather to Florida over the Holiday weekend

 

FLORIDA -- The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) reminds Florida’s residents and visitors to remain aware of current weather situations this holiday weekend, as a storm system may bring heavy rainfall across much of the Sunshine State. Potential flooding conditions will affect Southeast Florida through this evening. This threat could shift northward to portions of the Northern Peninsula later this weekend as the system nears this area of the state. This same system could bring strong onshore winds, which may lead to rough surf, large breaking waves and a high risk of rip currents along the Atlantic Coast through next week.

On Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm multiple fire crews from Clay and Putnam counties and the Florida Forest Service were dispatched to a wildfire off State Road 100 near County Road 219.

St. Johns River Blue Crab Trap Closure Starts Jan. 16

 

Recreational and commercial blue crab harvesters in the St. Johns River system must remove their blue crab traps from the water before Jan. 16, the first day of a 10-day trap closure. This closure will give groups authorized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to gather traps the opportunity to identify and retrieve lost and abandoned blue crab traps from the water.

According to a viewer tip, firefighters are battling a small brush fire on US21/Blanding Boulevard southbound between Black Creek and Palmetto Street.

Clay County Fire Rescue has confirmed the fire as a training burn.
