Heart Hero Happy Hour helps children fighting heart disease

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Local children fighting heart disease will enjoy the Christmas spirit thanks to Cantina Laredo and the American Heart Association (AHA) Young Professional Board’s Heart Hero Happy Hour held on November 20 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Guests will enjoy music by Stephen Carey on Cantina Laredo’s patio while supporting the children and families living with the devastating effects of congenital heart disease. Guests are asked to bring a child’s toy and will be given on complementary Casa Rita in return.

Statewide, the American Heart Heroes is a free program for children and their families who live with the devastating effects of congenital heart defects. This program provides a place where families come together, with resources provided by the American Heart Association to navigate the challenges and celebrate the successes of living with congenital heart defects.

Just in time for the summer's biggest holiday, Florida By Water released their 2012 list of places to view fireworks from your boat. So far, they’re featuring more than 50 locations submitted by local Chambers of Commerce and Tourism & Visitors bureaus from across the Sunshine State.

DCF tests tech at "Food for Florida" mock disaster

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Department of Children and Families employees from all over the state came together in Tallahassee today to test the agency’s “Food for Florida” disaster preparation operations. The program allows DCF to provide emergency food assistance to families in need after a hurricane or another disaster.

3rd Annual Spring-4-A-Cure Relay slated for March 24

This year’s Spring 4-A-Cure 5K Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, March 24, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The race will begin and end at the St. Augustine Shores Riverview Club.

All proceeds from entry fees will be donated to the American Cancer Society. The race is being sponsored by the Mason Manatee Relay for Life team.

Awards will be given to the overall female and male winners. Recognition will also be given to the top three finishers in various age categories. Ample parking will be provided for all participants.

The course is scenic, safe, well marked, and has drink stations. You can preregister online by going to http://www.racesmith.com/races/Spring-4-A-Cure5K.html.
