As a part of Florida Hurricane Preparedness Week, state emergency management officials are encouraging every pet owner in Florida to include their animals in their family disaster preparedness plan before the start of the 2011 Atlantic Hurricane Season. By planning for the needs of your pets, it will greatly increase the chances of their survival during disasters.

Clay County Health Department Warns of Risks Associated with Wildfire Smoke

The Clay County Health Department and the Florida Department of Health (DOH) caution citizens that wildfire smoke is a respiratory irritant that can cause scratchy throat or irritated eyes and nose. Smoke can also worsen conditions such as asthma and other chronic respiratory or lung conditions.  According to Nancy Mills, Administrator Clay County Health Department, “Clay County is experiencing smoke from the wild fires burning in South Georgia. Clay County residents and visitors are asked to take the necessary precautions.”

Youth Win Immunization PSA Contest

Each year in the United States, we lose 1,070 people to meningitis and 4,590 people to cervical cancer caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). In an effort to spread the word about these vaccine-preventable diseases and raise awareness among teens, Brunet-García Advertising sponsored the Florida Bureau of Immunization’s You Call the Shots public service announcement (PSA) contest; inviting youth ages 11 to 18 to produce and enter a 30-second  PSA highlighting the importance of HPV and meningitis vaccinations.

Middleburg Relay for Life, April 16th

Middleburg and Orange Park walkers go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. This celebration of life brings together numerous groups and individuals concerned about cancer in a unified effort to fight back.

Teams of enthusiastic citizens will gather at Middleburg High School Stadium for an overnight relay from 6 p.m. on April 15th until noon on April 16th.
