Boating Fatalities Up 24% From This Time Last Year

With just a few weeks remaining in the year, 2010 has proved to be a tragic one for boating accidents. So far, there have been 76 boating fatalities, a 24-percent increase from this time last year. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) wants Florida boaters to reverse this trend.

Through a grant from State Farm officials, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office placed multiple banners around our county this week to raise awareness about this problem.  The message on the banners reads “Texting + Driving: A Deadly Combination”. Banner locations include Orange Park, Middleburg, Green Cove Springs, Keystone and Fleming Island.

Get to Know the “Five P’s” of Cold Weather Safety

Florida Division of Emergency Management officials are again urging all residents and visitors throughout Florida to prepare for temperatures near or below the freezing mark tonight through Wednesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a Hard Freeze Warning for all of North and Central Florida, and also for Glades, Hendry and Palm Beach counties.  A Freeze Warning has also been issued for the rest of South Florida. The entire state is under either a Wind Chill Advisory or Warning, depending on the location.
 
According to Division of Emergency Management Director David Halstead. “It is vital that all residents and visitors remember the “Five P’s” of cold weather safety: Protect People, Protect Plants, Protect Pets, Protect Exposed Pipes, and Practice Fire Safety.”

Dr. Dawn Emerick, Executive Director of the Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida, will facilitate a kick-off meeting for the Concussions Study Council which consists of over 20 medical professionals and sports personnel.

World AIDS Day is Recognized by Clay County Health Department

The Florida Department of Health and the Clay County Health Department recognizes December 1st as World AIDS Day.  The World Health Organization first established World AIDS Day in 1988. This day is dedicated to raising awareness of the AIDS epidemic.  The most important steps in preventing HIV are to get tested, know your status, and the status of your partner.

World AIDS Week will be observed in Northeast Florida from Nov. 29 - Dec. 4

The Northeast Florida World AIDS Week Committee has activities planned throughout the week in its continued quest to bring awareness to HIV/AIDS in Jacksonville and surrounding areas. Education Days, a quilt display, a Community Awards ceremony, and more will take place during the week.
