Local high schools receive their new grades

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Nearly half of Florida's high schools are getting an A grade for the 2012-13 school year.

The grades released Wednesday by the Florida Department of Education show a slight increase in the number of A graded schools.

But the number of D and F rated schools also went up. There were eight high schools that received F grades as opposed to just three in 2012.

The School District of Clay County received grades for their seven high schools. All Clay County High Schools received either an A or B, with seven schools earning A's. Orange Park High School went from a B last year to an A this year.

"It was a team effort that required perseverance," said Principal Treasure Pickett. "We are so excited that all the qualifying factors came together this year."

The state grades its high schools based on student performance on tests, as well as graduation rates and other factors.

Nearly 70 percent of Duval County high schools earned either an A or B. That's a first for the district and for the second year in a row no high school got a failing grade.

Of the 23 schools graded nine earned A's, five earned B's, six earned C's and one school received a D. Two high schools, Englewood and First Coast, are appealing their grades.

"The work I have seen in Duval County high school is improving; our teachers and our leaders are demanding and supporting our students to become college and workforce ready," said Nikolai Vitti, Superintendent of Schools. "The results will only continue to improve as our systems to refine the quality instruction mature and develop over the years."

Florida released grades for the rest of its public schools over the summer amid a controversy over the accuracy of the grading formula.

The state has a safety net provision in place that prevents a school from dropping more than one letter grade a year.
