High School Students: Time to Enter Manatee Art Contest

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) invites high school art students across the state to participate in a contest to create a piece of manatee artwork that will be used on the 2011-2012 manatee decal.

Students in grades 9-12 in Florida should coordinate with their school’s art teacher to submit the artwork, because each school may submit no more than five entries. Home-schooled students also are eligible to enter the contest. Contest details and forms are available online at MyFWC.com/Manatee.

$5,000 in Scholarship Money Available from Chamber Foundation

Scholarship applications will be accepted online for the Clay County Chamber Foundation Scholarship Program. This year, the Chamber Foundation will award three $1,000 scholarships and four $500 scholarships to high school seniors to encourage the pursuit of continuing and vocational education that will develop and enhance skills and knowledge in their chosen fields. All high school seniors in Clay County are encouraged to apply, regardless of academic merit or financial need status. In addition, the Clay County Bar Association will award two $1,000 scholarships to a high school senior to encourage the pursuit of continuing education in the field of business or law.

Keystone Heights High School Closes in on Sending a Student to Uganda

For the past two months, students at Keystone Heights Jr./Sr. High School have worked tirelessly to raise money for students in northern Uganda, through the U.S. based nonprofit Invisible Children’s Schools for Schools campaign. To date, high schools and colleges across the U.S. have raised over $800,000 in their goal for one million dollars by December 17th.

Florida Youth Program to Graduate 158 Teens Saturday

Florida’s Youth ChalleNGe Academy is run by the Florida Department of Military Affairs and the Florida National Guard. Designed on a military model, 16- to 19-year-old high school dropouts encounter a rigorous five-and-a-half month residential phase.  These teens are given a second chance to earn a high school diploma, but this is the first class in which the Academy has partnered with St. Johns River Community College to offer college credits to the students.

All American Games Present the got milk? U.S. Army All-American Cheer Teams Competition

Get your routines ready because here's something to cheer about! "got milk?" and the All American Games have teamed up for the 2010 got milk? U.S. Army All-American Cheer Teams Competition - a chance for two cheer squads from across America to show what you've got on the sidelines of the annual U.S. Army All-American Bowl on January 8, 2011.

To enter the competition, just upload a video of your best routine on HighSchoolSports.net beginning November 1. Cheer squads and fans can also view all the entries and vote for your favorite routine! Voting ends on December 8, so go, fight, WIN!

The two winning squads will be announced after December 17, 2010.

UNF to Host Camp Composition: Florida Writes!

The University of North Florida’s College of Education and Human Services will host Camp Composition: Florida Writes!, a writing camp to aid fourth through eighth graders to become better FCAT and lifelong writers, from 9 a.m. to noon, beginning Saturday, Jan. 22, and running through Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, in the College of Education and Human Services, Building 57, Room 1100A on the UNF campus.
