Fuel Price Brief for the Week of May 8

Oil prices dropped below $100 a barrel for the first time since February 25, to settle Friday at $97.18 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange—$16.75 less than last week. The announcement of Osama bin Laden’s death immediately caused oil prices to drop $10 a barrel at the start of the week on speculation his death could ease some of the turmoil in the Middle East.

Sinkhole Closes Northbound Lane on Blanding Blvd.

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- A sinkhole has forced the Clay County Sheriff's Office to close one northbound lane of Blanding Boulevard, south of the Orange Park Mall.

Accoridng to CCSO, the far right lane will be closed for about four hours while the Florida Department of Transportation works to repair it. 

The sinkhole measures 3-feet-deep by 2-feet-wide and is located near the intersection of Blanding and Edson Drive.

Deputies are on scene to direct traffic around the road closure.  CCSO is asking motorists to avoid the area if at all possible.  The alternate routes are SR 17 and Brannanfield/Chaffee Road.

First Coast News has a crew headed to the scene and will be giving live updates beginning at 5 p.m.

The price of crude oil advanced again last week after the U.S. Labor Department reported payroll gains were greater than projected. Payrolls increased 216,000 in March when they were projected to increase 190,000. The increase boosted investor confidence that demand is on the rise going into the summer driving season.

Fuel Price Brief for the Week of March 20

The national average price of unleaded regular gasoline is $3.54 per gallon, once-cent less than last week. Florida’s average price of $3.56 and Tennessee’s average price of $3.40 both decreased 2 cents from last week. While Georgia’s average price of $3.45 decreased 4 cents from last week, respectively.

Florida Average Gas Price Up 16 Cents

As unrest in the Mideast and Libya continued to escalate last week, so did the price of crude oil. For the first time since September of 2008, the price of oil closed above $100 a barrel.

Protests in Libya continue to cause concern the unrest will spread to larger oil producing countries and disrupt oil supply. In addition, reports showing the U.S. unemployment rate fell to 8.9 percent, the lowest level since 2009, also drove up the price of oil.
