Voluntary evacuations underway for homeowners near Black Creek | Weather

MIDDLEBURG, Fla. -- A voluntary evacuation notice is in effect for people in Clay County living near the Black Creek.  The creek is more than five feet above flood stage and is continuing to rise.

There is currently a shelter open at Middleburgh High School on County Road 220.

 Homeowners along Black Creek know a lot about flooding, and Tropical Storm Debby has their attention.

Heavy rains Sunday night and the forecast of more rain this week has residents taking precautions and preparing their homes, even though many are elevated.

"We have done everything we can do," said Natalie Bickford, who has been down this road before. The last major flooding along Black Creek was in early 2003.

Captain Bernita Bush with Clay County Fire & Rescue says since the floodwater is continuing to rise, residents need to start making some serious decisions about whether they are going to stay inside their homes or seek shelter.
